Can Dehydration Affect Your Golf Game?

There is golf-specific research suggesting that hydration status can matter, especially because golf combines physical activity with repeated motor and decision-making tasks over several hours.

What Golf Research Has Found

A small study of seven low-handicap golfers compared performance in hydrated and mildly dehydrated conditions. Mild dehydration was associated with shorter shot distance, worse off-target accuracy, and greater error in distance judgment.

A more recent systematic review of nutrition and golf performance also identified hydration as one of the better-studied areas in golf nutrition. The review noted evidence linking dehydration with fatigue and potentially poorer golf performance, while also emphasizing that the golf-specific evidence base is still limited and often uses small samples.

What This Means for Everyday Golfers

You do not need to obsess over an exact fluid number. Instead, avoid starting the round behind, keep water available, drink consistently, and adjust for heat, humidity, walking, and your own sweat rate.

Water or Electrolytes?

Water is foundational. Electrolytes can become more relevant as sweat losses increase, particularly during hot or long rounds. Individual needs vary.

A Better On-Course Habit

Start hydrated, keep drinking through the front nine, and use the turn as a checkpoint instead of waiting for obvious thirst or fatigue.
